Important Advice on How to Choose the Right Perfume

Finding the right perfume often requires hours of sampling, balancing and guessing, before the perfect fragrance is identified. In order to know how to choose the right perfume, it is helpful to understand how perfumes work, and how they function on the body. Most customers approach the perfume counter, dabble away with various fragrances until they find one that they think they like, and then the purchase that perfume. This process is risky, however, because different smells can merge together, contaminating the essence of each new fragrance. Understanding these five myths and facts will carry you a long way towards understanding how to choose the right perfume for yourself and for others.

Myth #1: The best way to know how to choose the right perfume is to dabble a little bit behind the ears and on the wrists and to smell it quickly.

Fact: If a fragrance is only applied to the wrist, neck or behind the ears, it will rise up and quickly evaporate. The best way to see if a fragrance is the right one for you is to apply it all over the body in small amounts. Believe it or not, clean hair holds fragrances very well and oily skin holds the perfume better than dry skin.

Myth #2: Smell a fragrance a few minutes after dabbling it on in the store to see if you like it. If you don’t like it, keep trying other fragrances until you find one you like.

Fact: One of the little known secrets about how to choose the right perfume is that you can’t make a quick decision. If you are trying on perfume in the store, dabble it on, and then walk around the mall for an hour. The fragrance needs time to unfold and to mix with your body’s chemistry. In addition, never try more than two scents on your body. You will create a sensory overload, and won’t be able to evaluate if you like the scent of a specific perfume. If you’ve tried two and didn’t like them, come back a different day to consider your search.

Myth #3: When searching for a perfume gift, you can assume that the fragrance will smell the same on the person that you are giving it to as it did when you tried it on yourself.

Fact: The exact same fragrance will smell different on every person. Each of us has our own body chemistry and the fragrance reacts differently based on a person’s genes and the overall Ph balance of their skin. To find the right fragrance for a friend or spouse, you might need to bring them along to test it out.

Myth #4: If you don’t like to reapply perfume throughout the day, try to find a brand that will last all day.

Fact: Fragrances are designed to be enjoyed for about four hours. It is not realistic to try to find one that will last all day, unless you find something that is terribly powerful and overwhelming. In addition, a perfume bottle can be enjoyed, and will still be aromatic, for approximately three years. After that, it’s time for a new selection.

Myth #5: Once you find a perfume that you like, it will be perfect for all occasions.

Fact: Not all perfumes are perfect for all occasions. While a fruity, citrus scent is lovely for a daytime outing in the summer, a deeper, musky scent might work better for an evening function or a winter time activity. Take the seasons, the time of day, and the event into consideration when thinking about how to choose the right perfume. You may want to select a few different scents to wear for different functions and during different times of the year.

With the proper research and selection process, you should be able to choose a perfect perfume for yourself and for those you love. Think about these five important facts next to that you explore how to choose the right perfume. After all, you deserve to smell as beautiful as you look every day!
